The Brusko Pacific Coast Epic

Bound by the Pacific Ocean to the east and flanked by the beautiful mountains of the Sierra Madre to its west, the Brusko Pacific Coast Epic takes you on a pedal-powered journey through the scenic landscapes of General Nakar.

All categories will travel across the General Nakar to Umiray route. 95% of the course runs on trails, including fire roads, gravel tracks, river crossings, uphills, downhills, and flats.

General Nakar has everything to offer, and a unique cycling experience awaits at the 5th Brusko Pacific Coast Epic.

General Nakar, Quezon Province

General Nakar is a municipality located in the province of Quezon, Philippines. It is situated on the eastern side of Luzon Island, facing the Pacific Ocean. The municipality is known for its natural beauty, with a landscape that includes dense forests, rolling hills, rivers, and pristine beaches.

General Nakar is also home to several indigenous communities, including the Dumagat tribe, who have maintained their traditional way of life and culture. The municipality is considered an ecotourism destination, offering visitors the chance to experience nature and immerse themselves in the local culture.

In terms of infrastructure, General Nakar has a few small towns and villages, with basic amenities such as shops, restaurants, and accommodations. The area is relatively undeveloped, which adds to its natural charm and appeal

What it is:

The 160 KM Team category is a 2-day stage race with teams consisting of 2 riders each. Stage 1 takes on a 100-km course that begins at the General Nakar Municipal Hall, followed by a short out-and-back route to the Pagsangahan U-Turn Checkpoint, before heading straight to Dinigman, where teams will spend the night. Your essentials, packed in a small bag, will be transported to Dinigman. Participants will be provided with tent accommodations by the beach and adjacent to the river and will be treated to hefty meals and drinks after a long day's ride. A mechanic will also be available on-site. Stage 2 starts in Dinigman, and teams will have a 60-km homestretch back to the General Nakar Municipal Hall. A lunch buffet awaits participants at the General Nakar Municipal Hall.

Quick Directions:

Day 1:

  • From the General Nakar Municipal Hall, turn right at Syltex Gasoline Station.
  • Turn left to Sitio Pagsangahan U-Turn Checkpoint. Check-in and go back to the junction.
  • Go back to the junction, turn left towards Dinigman. This marks the end of Stage 1.

Day 2:

  • Start at Dinigman and head straight back to the General Nakar Municipal Hall.

No bike limit. MTB/ Fat bike / Gravel bike are allowed. Road bike is NOT allowed.

Fully-charged E-bike

What it is?

The 67km E-Bike Group Adventure Challenge Category is a fully marshaled group ride in a single-stage out-and back course that begins at the General Nakar Municipal Hall, enters the main race course and goes all the way to Masanga. This category is not a race, but more of a challenge for the participants to manage their batteries well during the event. Participants will need to group themselves, provided that no group or participant will go ahead of the designated spearhead for this category. The route will not entail deep river crossing, however, there will be narrow tributaries to be crossed ergo expect water splashes. There will be a charging station in a pre-determined location which will be located enroute back to the finish (no charging before the turn-around is allowed).

Under Bike Restrictions

For the 75Km E-Bike Group Adventure Challenge Category, PEDALEC or bikes that will activate the motor once pedaled are allowed (throttle are also allowed provided bikes should also have the PEDALEC option). Hub drive or mid-drive bikes are allowed. No e-bikes shall exceed the speed limit of 40 kph during the event since the track is shared with analog bikes. The tires’ front and rear minimum is 2.40. No rigid forks for e-bikes are allowed, hard tail to full-suspension bike only. E-bikes that have derestriction or were de-restricted are allowed to join provided they shall observe the group maximum speed set by the group spearhead and shall not be allowed to overtake the lead. Rated motor power shall be from 250w to 1,000w only. E-bikes beyond 1000w are not allowed. Battery capacity should be at least 400wH. Participants should bring their charger.

Charging Station

Only one charging station will be set up. Charging will be done only AFTER the turn-around. The location of the charging station will be announced days before the event. Charing will be on a first come first served basis.

Mechanics:

The E-bike Group Adventure Challenge will be released as one group. All participants under this category need to ride the track as a group led by a lead marshal until Km 33.5. If you’re riding alone, no problem you’ll be part of the whole group until the turn around point (33.5km). As soon as you get your wrist band in the turn around, all participants may individually ride on their own from Km 33.5 all the way to the finish line (Km 67).

Charging station will be stationed in Km 45. Those who wish to re-charge may turn over their chargers ( properly marked ) to the Charging Marshal between 5:30am to 6:00am Aug 19 at the starting line. You may redeem your chargers as soon as the marshal returns to the finish line on or before the cut off time at 5:30pm

What it is

A no-frill fun ride to experience the beauty of General Nakar on two-wheels.  This is for bikers of any level of ability.

Quick Directions:

  • From the General Nakar Municipal Hall, turn right at Syltex Gasoline Stations.
  • At the junction, take a right.
  • Turn right to Camp Sandugo Tamala.
  • Head back to the General Nakar Municipal Hall.

NOTE: The Race Director/Organizers reserve the right to change the route at any time or while the race is in progress.

AID STATIONS

There will be aid/feed stations more or less every 10 kilometers. Major aid stations will have solid food, snacks, rice meals available while other stations will have water only. 

Participants retain the ultimate responsibility to carry enough hydration and nutrition with them.

Note: 

  • Racers for the 160km and 100km Categories will receive the long-sleeves event shirt while shorter distances will get the short-sleeves event shirt. 
  • Tourism Fees for participants are now included with the registration fee.

E-BIKE RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The 67km Group Adventure E-Bike Challenge is open to e=bikes owners with hub or mid driver motors, with tires front and rear width minimum of 2.4’, hardtail or full suspension mt. bikes.

2. Enroute to the turn around and check point of 33.5 kms all e-bike participants shall ride as group, with the team ride marshal in front setting the pace for the entire group. No one is allowed go ahead nor over take the team ride marshal until km 33.5.

3. Participants arriving with the team ride marshal shall be given a wrist band as proof that they have arrived at the turn-around point, riding with the group together with the ride marshals.

4. Any rider arriving before the team ride marshal to the 33.5km turn-around shall be disqualified and shall NOT be given a wrist band.

5. From km 33.5 to the finish line, the group will be released and the participants can proceed on their own without the team ride marshal back to Nakar Municipal Hall.

6. All qualified finishers shall receive a medal.

7. Maximum speed for the team ride going to the first 33.5km and for the individual ride going back to finish is pegged at 45 kph.

8. This category is about managing the battery consumption of each participant. A test run has been made to ascertain whether a fully-charged e-bike can complete the course and the result was that it is doable (i.e., one rider rode a bike with 700wH battery with a total weight of 205 lbs and was able to complete the course with 29% battery life and an estimated distance left of 20km)

9. Participants are encouraged to save battery power by turning off their bikes during down hill or managing their assist levels when required.

10. It will be the participants’ own responsibility to shuttle their e-bike back to the finish line if their batteries ran out or if they encounter any mechanical or technical problems same as the other analog riders.

11. There will be a charging station in km 44.5 enroute back (or 22.5 km); participants who may want to charge can bring their own charger or may elect to hand over their respective charger to the marshal assigned for this provided that they should mark their chargers with their names, mobile number and sign a waiver form that the organizers are not responsible for the loss or damage of their charger.

MEDICAL / HEALTH REQUIREMENT

  • Participants must be in good health condition and well-trained.
  • Participants must submit a medical or health certificate that recognizes the named participant to be of good health and fit to join the specific distance (165 KM, 100 KM, 75 KM, 30 KM) of the race.
  • Health requirements are subject to change pursuant to the LGU requirements.  Announcements will be made for any additional requirements or health protocols.

BIKE RESTRICTIONS

1. For 75 KM & 100 KM MTB Categories Mountain Bikes should have suspension forks with recommended minimum tire size of 2.0. Rigid forks will be allowed provided that tires should have a minimum size of 3.0.Fat bikes are welcome to join MTB categories. However, there will be no sub-category for fat bikes. Fat bikes will be considered as MTB’s.

*E-MTB’s & gravel bikes are not allowed.*

2. For 160 KM TEAM Category

Fat bikes are welcome to join the 160 KM TEAM category.
Rigid forks on MTB’s will also be allowed.
*E-MTB’s are not allowed.*

3. For CAMP SANDUGO 30K FUN RIDE Category

No bike restrictions for the 30K Camp Sandugo Fun Ride, however, mountain bikes and gravel bikes are highly recommended for General Nakar’s trails

E-MTB’s will be allowed for the Camp Sandugo 30K Fun Ride.

4. Registered participants who fail to comply with restrictions will not be allowed to participate in the event or will be subjected for disqualification.

5. Maintenance/safe working condition of bicycles during the race is the responsibility of each rider.

HELMET AND CLOTHING

  • All participants must wear helmets while riding. Participants who fail to comply will be flagged down and asked to wear their helmets properly. Frequent violation of the participant may lead to disqualification.
  • Race bibs must be worn properly and must be visible at all times. Race numbers for handle bars / drop bars will also be provided and should be properly displayed at all times.
  • Participants are not allowed to change bib numbers nor complete the race in their behalf.
  • Wearing closed shoes is highly recommended, but not mandatory.

RACE CONDUCT / RULING / ENVIRONMENTAL

  • Participants must present themselves in a sportsmanlike and good character. Participants must not use offensive or abusive language during the race, act in an unsporting manner, be disrespectful to the officials, or ignore the race regulations. Race director, officials, and organizers may disqualify participants who fail to conduct themselves properly.
  • Intentional contact by pushing, pulling, or other means which causes another competitor to slow down, fall, or exit the course is not allowed and results in disqualification.
  • Participants must respect the countryside, its locals, and its customs.
  • Riders must be present at the starting/staging area before the race. Attendance of race safety briefing is also a must.
  • Participants must complete the entire distance of the race, and the responsibility for following the official route lies with the participant. Cutting corners and taking short cuts that lead to an unfair advantage are considered illegal and will lead to disqualification.
  • Unnecessary damage to the environment and littering will not be tolerated. Observe leave no trace principle.

WITHDRAWAL

  • Any participant who cannot continue for whichever reason must immediately inform Race Officials. Race Officials will require you to surrender your race bib.
  • Participants who are given a Did Not Start (DNS), Did Not Finish (DNF), or Disqualified (DSQ) are not entitled to a finisher’s medal and will not be included in the standing.
  • Participants who will take/hire motorized vehicle transportation assistance during their race run will be disqualified from the race.

DISQUALIFICATION

Participants may be disqualified at the discretion of the race officials for any one or more of the following reasons including but not limited to:

  • Not wearing a helmet
  • Littering
  • Damage to environment
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct
  • Disrespect to race officials
  • Conduct violations
